Because they don't realize they're perpetuating their own emotional suppression. Today I came across a post on LinkedIn describing the "rules for sons" that a father should impart. Almost all of them spoke of bravery, hiding your emotions, protecting others, and exhibiting confidence. There was nothing there about tenderness, vulnerability, sadness, fear, trust, love ... the qualities that are most needed to forge deep intimate connections. The post was liked by over 14,000 people.
